Invest in Yourself: An Introduction

Hello, my name is Christian Mercer and welcome to my blog! I wanted to start my blog off with an introduction and tell you what direction I want this website to go. First, I’ll give you a little bit of history about myself. Second, I will talk about some items I feel are important to investing in yourself. And finally, I will wrap up this first blog with some goals and ideas moving forward. Let’s get to it.

Again, my name is Christian, I live in Northern California, and I am a Registered Nurse, a Real Estate Investor, and a Health Advocate. As a Registered Nurse, I have worked in many different areas of the hospital for the last 15+ years. I have worked in the Emergency Department, Neurosurgical ICU, Pre & Post Op, Neonatal ICU, and finally, on a highly-specialized Neonatal Transport Team. As a Real Estate Investor, I bought my first property 12 years ago and last year I bought four rental properties to add to my portfolio. I plan on adding one more property to my portfolio later on this year and I’m very excited to go through that process again. I have been a Health Advocate since I started my career in the medical field at the age of 18 when I joined the United States Navy as a Hospital Corpsman. During my active duty service in the Navy from 1997-2002, I was stationed at five different Navy and Marine Corps bases throughout the U.S. and served during many different conflicts and war campaigns.

If you want to, “Invest in yourself,” you have to start with YOU first. Genius, right? I know, but think about it this way. Think of yourself as a commodity that only gets better the more you work on and improve yourself. By doing this, you will make yourself more valuable and more marketable. You have to acknowledge your inadequacies and work on yourself before you can serve others. You are the most important person in your life and that’s hard to think about or even say out loud. Especially if you are married or have children. But let me repeat that statement again: YOU ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON IN YOUR LIFE. You live with yourself 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you don’t take care of yourself first, then you can’t take care of those around you. As the old sports saying goes, “the best ability is availability.” Be your biggest asset so you can be present.

Finally, the overall goal of my website, blog posts, and individual conversations is to teach others how to achieve their Mental Wealth. I think learning how to invest in yourself by getting your mind right, learning how to live a physically healthy life, and being financially stable all contribute to one's Mental Wealth. However someone defines their own Mental Wealth, I want to help others work towards that. I’ve been serving others in some capacity or another for more than 25 years and there’s nothing I am more passionate about than helping others achieve their greatness.

Disclaimer: I started this blog as more of a therapeutic journal to document and share my life with others who are interested in listening. My blog posts will solely be based on my thoughts, opinions, and experiences as I work on my own path towards Mental Wealth. As I acquire new information along the way, my stance may change to reflect the new things I’ve learned. I, too, am a work in progress so please be patient, be kind, and bear with me. Thank you.  - CM
